A tending hash tag that came a cross is #Deaftalent. I do
not use Twitter because I do not see the point, for my personal use. However
for this hash tag I think it is a great tool. While this movement is not as
popular as it was a year ago the issue is still a problem. The purpose is to
stop hearing- abled actors and actresses playing deaf roles. However, the
movement went passed Hollywood and turned into empowering deaf people to speak
out about their personal talents. Out of
1,000 children two or three will be deaf. From the few children who are deaf,
90% of them are born into a hearing family. This makes the deaf community
extremely small.
However, with the creation of the hashtag more
deaf people have collaborated over social media. Social media has allowed them
to form groups online. People have become more accepting of the deaf culture
with assistance from popular media. While it has changed for the better, there
is still a lot that need to change.
On Twitter, users are still posting and using the hashtag;
the form #Deaftalent users and creator does not use it as much as when it first
started. Many deaf and hearing people connect on Twitter with the hash tag, and
the conversations are organized with it as well. Videos and links have also
helped branch out the deaf community and show what deaf talent really is.
There are few deaf people who have made into Hollywood. But
the two that have been just a give abdicate for this movement is Nyle DiMarco
and Marlee Matlin. Nyle DiMarco is a model who shared his stories on America’s
Next Top Model. Hearing people got to watch him live in the hearing word and
watched how he struggled and overcame his aversions. Marlee Matlin is a Academy Award winner for
Best Actress and has also won more awards for her work. Both use social media
to showcase the struggle for deaf people in Hollywood and how hard it is to be
deaf. Nyle DiMarco proves to the world deaf people can do ANYTHING—he was even
on Dancing with the Stars!
